From the time a donor walks in with her initial evaluation to the moment she goes home after an egg retrieval procedure, our main goal is always to protect the donor’s health. Though the procedure is very safe, we’re often asked by donors if they can do more to ensure their health. The answer is quite simply to educate yourself and always ask questions!
1. Is egg donation safe?
Simply put, yes! The medical field universally agrees that donating your eggs is a safe procedure that has no long-term effects on a woman’s health or fertility. Studies observing more than 180,000 female egg donors discovered that there was no risk of ovarian cancer in women treated with ovarian stimulating drugs for fertility.
2. Will donating deplete my egg count?
Whether you donate your eggs once or several times (though we suggest no more than six), it will not affect the number of eggs you have in the future.
3. What medications do you use?
To ensure the health of our donors, we optimize medication dose so as not to have an extreme amount of eggs harvested per cycle. We only use Lupron trigger injection (as opposed to HCG injection) which virtually eliminates the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).
4. What is the egg retrieval process like?
Once all of the preparations have been made (ovarian stimulation, home injections, routine screenings), the egg retrieval process is a relatively simple 15-20 minute procedure. Although our donors undergo a light IV sedation, they’re typically able to return home shortly after the procedure.
5. Are there any risks associated with egg donation?
The egg retrieval process is surgery, therefore there are some minor risks associated with it, as there are for any medical procedure. However, the side effects are short-term and relatively minimal. Some short-term risks include:
- Weight gain
- Headaches
- Mood swings
- Bloating
